Abstract

The catholic shrine dedicated to Virgin Mary on the summit of the hill of Verdun has been the most important place of pilgrimage in Uruguay for more than one hundred years. Thousands of devotees gather there annually for special patriotic occasions. This paper documents and analyzes the diversity of beliefs and ritual practices associated with the hill of Verdun. Field ascents and informal interviews have been undertaken to broaden the understanding of the Verdun hill, not only as a centenary catholic shrine, but also in the context of an increasing visibility that the sacred dimension of mountains is currently acquiring in Uruguay.
