The democratic consolidation and the process of economic reforms experienced in Latin America in the 1990s projected a climate of optimism about the future of European-Latin American relations. This allowed the start of negotiations for association agreements. However, although the foundations of the relationship are still valid, especially in a long-term perspective, the current view is more cautious. This article briefly reviews the various values shared by both regions, dwells on the complexities of economic ties and, given that despite the fact that Latin America does not occupy a priority place for Europe in the field of cooperation for the development, however, points out that the prospects for European cooperation are not entirely bleak.
