Abstract

The new international context in which Latin America is inserted raises questions about the prospects for regional integration. Without denying the persistence of national rivalries, we maintain that a new Latin American regionalism is taking place, which has resulted in a complex web of regional, subregional and bilateral agreements whose goal is the gradual liberalization of mutual trade. This integration has also been complemented by growing political cooperation. At the same time, there has been a convergence between the various hemispheric initiatives and regional processes. In this way, Latin American regionalism has assumed an open character that is manifested not only in the economic sphere but also in matters such as human rights, disarmament and the environment.
