This is an outline of motives and themes that still require patient study. Its first part tries to characterize, in broad lines, the development of the international economic system during the 25 years after the war; the second examines some critical events that shaped today's situation. Based on these elements, four different interpretations of the international situation are presented, from which unequal implications flow for different types of countries. These visions are not intended to capture in definitive terms the turbulent international situation. They only represent alternative points of view of a fragmentary and perhaps simplistic nature. But they respond to the need to have some frame of reference and analysis to order in a meaningful way the very disparate elements of the present world scenario.
